Spanish Phraseology

What it is:

  • A set of brief, apt, and cogent expressions used by a particular group of people under a particular set of circumstances such as an occupation.

What it is NOT:

  • Spanish 101
  • Conversational Spanish
  • about grammar: morphology(structure of words), lexicon(vocabulary), syntax(sentence structure), semantics (meaning of words & sentences)
  • about linguistics: the history of the relation of languages to each other, bilingualism and second language acquisition

For Example:

  • to enable you to ask some basic questions

o name ( provider, community service site, counselor’s, …etc.)

o address (probationer’s, treatment center, …etc.)

o phone (probationer’s, treatment center, …etc.)

o number of hours to date (treatment, community service, hours worked per week …etc.)

  • to enable you to understand basic answers (from questions you asked)

o yes / no (its yes or no, no run around)

o a name

o an address

o a telephone number

  • to enable you to understand some basic questions

o provide court date, time and court room

o a name

o an address

o my next appointment date

  • to enable you to provide some basic commands

o get an appointment for an evaluation

o bring verification

o make a drop

o call:

* your counselor (alcohol program)

* your community service cite

* your lawyer

* my interpreter

Training Course Content:

  • the alphabet
  • pronunciation – syllabication
  • numbers (0 – 99), taking and providing telephone numbers or addresses
  • key command phrases: just a minute, slow down, repeat, call my interpreter…etc.
  • some basics: the use of “tu” vs. “usted”
  • THE QUESTIONS
  • THE COMMANDS
